6 Reasons Why Your Skincare Routine Isn’t Working

There are numerous reasons why your regular skincare could be going for a toss. The best thing to do is to identify what the problem is and nip it in the bud. If you’re someone who has got their skincare routine on point but have noticed an increase in acne or other skin problems, you might be doing something wrong. While this could be due to environmental reasons or changes in one’s hormones, you shouldn’t rule out changes in your products. So let’s take a look at why your skin might not be behaving the way you want it to:

1. Your Skin Has Adjusted To It

Even the best and most expensive products can stop giving you the results you want. After a point, your skin gets adjusted to a specific routine, and it stops affecting it as much. Don’t give up hope, though. If you genuinely do believe that these products were making a difference to your skin, don’t switch them up. Many skincare lovers will recommend you use the products religiously for a period of 90 days before you decide to try something else. If you’re using specific products for problems like acne or dry skin, make sure you use them consistently for at least a month to see if there are any changes to your skin. If you still do not notice a change in your skin after three months, you should switch to using other products instead and see if that makes a difference.

2. Your Hormones Are “Wack”

Any changes to your environment or your lifestyle might impact your hormonal balance. If you’ve noticed a change in your diet or you might be seeing an increase in oil production in your skin, identify the changes, and stop them in their tracks. If you’re going through a lot of stress (which is totally normal during this time), your skin’s oil balance can go for a toss as well. The excessive oil and sebum your skin is producing can lead to clogged pores and bad skin. If you notice these issues haven’t gone away after changing your diet and making healthy changes to your routine, you should get in touch with a dietician or a dermatologist. It’s always good to get a checkup done if you are unsure about something.

3. The Weather Has Changed

Yes, even changes in weather can cause your skin to break out severely, and you need to change and adjust your skincare routine accordingly. During the winter months, the humidity levels are low and this can leave your skin vulnerable to dryness and other issues. If you live in a place with harsh summers, the extreme heat can also cause an increase in the amount of oil and sebum that is produced by your skin. During winters, using a heavy dose of moisturizer or cream can cause the product to build upon your skin’s layers.

4. You’re Not Using Your Products In The Right Order

When you are indulging in a skincare routine you need to make sure that you are not using your products in an incorrect manner. You need to make sure that you layer your products properly and apply them in a certain way. You can’t apply moisturizer before you apply your toner or apply toner before washing your face. If you want your skin to improve, you need to take into account the fact that skincare has certain steps that need to be followed. If you’re using certain acne products like retinol and AHAs, it’s not a good idea to apply them on the same day. Always consult a dermatologist before you take any drastic measures in your skincare routine.

5. Your Products Have Expired

It’s okay. You don’t need to be hard on yourself. Many of us have been stuck indoors and haven’t bothered reading up on our makeup labels. Due to this, one or maybe more of our skincare products could have expired, and we would have no clue. Whenever you are making a skincare product purchase, always check the expiration date and see how long the average product should last you. Check for smell change, color change, or separation between the oil and water.

6. Your Skin Just Needs To Take A Break

If you’ve been overloading your skin with products, you just need to give your skin a break. Sometimes going on a “skin fast” can help you, and you can just focus on keeping your skin oil-free by washing it regularly with a gentle cleanser or face wash. However, you need to make sure that you adequately hydrate and cleanse your skin. Once you have ensured that your routine covers the basics of skin, you can start swapping out on products that may help your skin better.

Great skin does not come easy. You may look at your favorite celebrity and think they have flawless skin, but you have no idea about the upkeep and maintenance required. And hey, even someone as beautiful as Aiswarya Rai could get a zit or have a bad skin day. It’s perfectly normal to have a bad skin day or maybe even a bad skin week. As long as you don’t let it impact your self-esteem and you remain confident, nothing else should matter. Do you agree with the points stated on our list?
